Once we were all promised a better tomorrow with robots, atomic powered cars, and inflatable plastic homes. After the 2nd World War, the promise of technology created the illusion that everything would soon be possible. The false sense that our world to soon be a budding utopia was quickly shattered and there is now a lingering question : What will our future truly look like? Can we still believe that technology will bring us a better tomorrow?
“Century 21 Calling” is a monthly series which screened at Varia, Roterdam. In these screenings, we viewed archival industrial films and corporate infomercials which sculpted our image of tomorrow for the purposes of comparison with our current reality. Paired with the screenings, I created flyers using the visual language associated with our concept of the future. Each flyer utilised the themes brought up in each screening - mimicking also the aesthetic of the films themselves.
